Cathy (Hands On Design) & I had so much fun with this ribbon wrapped/pillow stack finish that first appeared in our Between Friends - A Fall Sampling book collaboration that we decided to create some more!
We have each designed our own selection of Ribbons full of patriotic charm. These are a perfect summertime stitch! What a great way to celebrate America 250!!

A Reproduction Sampler
How could I resist this antique sampler with my own initials? I love the simplicity of it and of course those initial letters are fabulous! Even though the original BAS didn’t leave many hints to trace her in history, I am guessing from her ordered sampler and the ornate initials that she was of PA German heritage. I have included two bonus designs in the chart, inspired by the original, along with finishing instructions to complete as shown.

This piece was inspired by a Colonial Pennsylvania “mourning stone.” I love the soft breeze blowing through the willow tree and the oversized urn. We often find solace in our needlework and I hope that his design relays that peace to you.

Feel free to sing along to this favorite old tyme song! Heaven looks like a cozy cottage, with a riotous garden of flowers, birds singing as they fly through the air and it's all surrounded by a delicate floral border. This design was inspired not only by the song, but also by my grandparents. The song was one of my grandmother's favorites and I always found their home a sanctuary of love.

Celebrate the Heartland with this design of rolling hills filled with abundant grain. It was inspired by my nieces when they found themselves lost one day in the middle of Illinois farm country. It's a little bit Grant Wood and a little bit Whimsy!

Oline's sampler has a way of getting into your heart, so this is the first "volume" of designs I created influenced by her needlework.

Roses, a cottage garden isn't complete without them. Whether it is a border of shrub roses, a trellis of climbing roses or a finely trimmed topiary, they become the center piece. I admit that I have had issues keeping roses healthy, so I have changed to more recent cultivars of Knock-Out Roses and the newest Drift varieties. They fill my rose loving heart!

We have come to the close of our garden visit and our final visit is with Mari Gold. She is such a workhorse of the garden, protecting other plants and blooming for all she is worth. I think marigolds are like snowflakes, no two are alike, colors and patterns always different, always make you smile, just like the butterflies flitting in for a visit.

The colors of this design are so happy and I love how the center motif just pops out of the trellis design. The whole thing brought back memories of playing in my Grandmother's flower garden.

Antique samplers are like friends. Perhaps one reason that they are so enduring, is the connection that we feel with their stitchers as we look at them, stitch them, study them. I know Sarah Jane Grant would have been a kindred spirit. She obviously loved the natural world as she included birds, insects and even little dogs on her sampler. I let her inspire me to create three new projects, a smaller sampler, a double-sided pinkeep and a darner. Sweet projects to make for a friend or for yourself!
